China meets 2020 carbon budget ahead of schedule

China met its 2020 carbon intensity target three years early, its Xinhua news agency has reported. By the end of 2017, the nation had cut its carbon intensity 46 percent below its 2005 level. This drop came during a period when its economy more than doubled in size.

China’s 2030 goal is to cut carbon emissions per unit of gross domestic product by 60 percent from its 2005 level.

While President Trump and the Republican Party double down on fossil fuels and interfere with the growth of renewable energy, China has become a global leader in the energies of the future. Trump talks about bringing back the jobs of the dying coal industry, while China creates millions of jobs in renewable energy.

In doing so, China has seized moral authority and economic prowess. Trump and the climate-science-denying GOP have made the US a global pariah: the only nation refusing to participate in the Paris climate accord. Their embrace of the fossil fuels that will wreak increasing havoc over the decades and centuries to come betrays their pious claims of being “pro-life.” Instead, as the only major political party in the world that denies what every national academy of science has confirmed, the GOP has become the party of death, and the greatest political enemy of the little ones of every species.

About the author

David Backes

I have always been drawn to where the wild things are: the natural world around me, and the wilderness within. As a writer, speaker, and university professor, I have for decades focused on this combination of nature and the human spirit. In recent years, my spiritual journey has added another lens: social, environmental and intergenerational justice. Put it all together and you’ve got The Earth Keeper, a blog of integral ecology and the prophetic imagination. The Earth Keeper may at times make you feel hopeful or inspired; it may make you feel uncomfortable or defensive or even angry. I hope it often will be challenging, and always interesting.
