The Republican era of “half-witted intolerance”

In West Virginia, Republican Senate candidate Don Blankenship accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) of creating jobs for “China people” and getting donations from his “China family.” (McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, was born in Taiwan.) In Georgia, Republican gubernatorial candidate Michael Williams drives around in a bus he promises to fill with “illegals” who will be deported to Mexico. On the rear is stamped: “Murderers, rapists, kidnappers, child molestors [sic], and other criminals on board.” In Arizona, Republican Senate candidate (and former Maricopa County sheriff) Joe Arpaio is a proud “birther” with a history of profiling and abusing Hispanic migrants. Vice President Pencerecently called Arpaio “a great friend of this president, a tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law.” In Wisconsin, Republican House candidate Paul Nehlen runs as a “pro-white Christian American candidate.”

That’s the opening paragraph of a column by Michael Gerson, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, and a conservative who is appalled at what has become of his party, and what it is doing to the nation. Read More

Santa Fe High School student shows sad resignation of kids everywhere about school shootings

Santa Fe High School student Paige Curry spoke to a TV reporter after Friday morning’s Texas school shooting in plain, soft-spoken, brutal English. This is a must-watch 30 seconds. We have utterly failed the children, and her resignation speaks volumes to all those “thoughts and prayers” politicians who refuse to take action. It speaks volumes to the evil of the NRA, a homegrown cult of violence. Listen up, anti-life party: For years you fraudulently claimed President Obama was a secret Muslim who would take your guns away. Well, one day these kids who have lived with the terror your ideology has caused will wrest away your political power and they will indeed take away your guns. And it will be your own fault. Your own fault for refusing to face reality and follow common sense. Read More

True Christians don’t ignore God’s priority for the poor

“It is very hard to read the Bible and ignore God’s heart for the poor and the vulnerable,” an evangelical leader reminded more than fifty prominent evangelicals gathered recently at Wheaton College in Chicago. Read More

Nationalism is idolatry, says prominent evangelical

Nationalism is a form of idolatry that “turns God into our ‘godling,’ a deity subject to our bidding,” an evangelical leader reminded more than fifty prominent evangelicals gathered recently at Wheaton College in Chicago. Read More

White Christian racism permeates American life

The “unreckoned-with reality of white evangelical racism permeates American life,” an evangelical leader reminded more than fifty prominent evangelicals gathered recently at Wheaton College in Chicago. Read More

The fake news Gospel and colonized Christianity

A “toxic evangelicalism” has spread a fake news Gospel that betrays the good news of Jesus Christ, a leading evangelical told a Chicago gathering of more than fifty other leaders who agree that the word “evangelical” has become widely associated with radical right-wing politics and needs to be reclaimed. Weep for humanity and all living things

A civilization in denial and heading for disaster. That was the story 2,600 years ago, and that is our story today.

In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God judges a society by how it treats the poor, the elderly, the outcasts, and the land. This conveniently has been forgotten in America and in other wealthy nations. I gave a talk about this a couple of weeks ago, and want to use it to kick off this new blog. It relates to all seven of the categories I have created for this site: religion, spirituality, politics, culture, science, nature and justice. My topic was about the Prophet Jeremiah and the lessons we can learn from his failure to break through the denial of his times. Only when we face reality and weep will we find genuine hope again. Here is what I said: Read More

Integral ecology and the prophetic imagination

The Earth Keeper combines science, politics, religion, spirituality, nature, culture and justice–a combination known as integral ecology. The goal is to bear witness to the signs of the times as well as advocate for a world in which the little ones of all species have the opportunity to live well. In this, it also is a blog of prophetic imagination.

Many years ago, an elderly friend told me his experience of December 7, 1941. Two months past his 18th birthday, he was spending that Sunday with friends at an ice-skating party on a lake near his home in northern Minnesota. Someone from a nearby house approached and, with an ashen face, told the group that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor. At that moment, the high school senior knew his whole life had changed, all his plans gone out the window. He felt a strong calling, and knew what he had to do. The next morning, along with many other young men, he went and enlisted in the Army. Read More
