The Republican era of “half-witted intolerance”

In West Virginia, Republican Senate candidate Don Blankenship accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) of creating jobs for “China people” and getting donations from his “China family.” (McConnell’s wife, Elaine Chao, was born in Taiwan.) In Georgia, Republican gubernatorial candidate Michael Williams drives around in a bus he promises to fill with “illegals” who will be deported to Mexico. On the rear is stamped: “Murderers, rapists, kidnappers, child molestors [sic], and other criminals on board.” In Arizona, Republican Senate candidate (and former Maricopa County sheriff) Joe Arpaio is a proud “birther” with a history of profiling and abusing Hispanic migrants. Vice President Pencerecently called Arpaio “a great friend of this president, a tireless champion of strong borders and the rule of law.” In Wisconsin, Republican House candidate Paul Nehlen runs as a “pro-white Christian American candidate.”

That’s the opening paragraph of a column by Michael Gerson, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, and a conservative who is appalled at what has become of his party, and what it is doing to the nation. Read More

Santa Fe High School student shows sad resignation of kids everywhere about school shootings

Santa Fe High School student Paige Curry spoke to a TV reporter after Friday morning’s Texas school shooting in plain, soft-spoken, brutal English. This is a must-watch 30 seconds. We have utterly failed the children, and her resignation speaks volumes to all those “thoughts and prayers” politicians who refuse to take action. It speaks volumes to the evil of the NRA, a homegrown cult of violence. Listen up, anti-life party: For years you fraudulently claimed President Obama was a secret Muslim who would take your guns away. Well, one day these kids who have lived with the terror your ideology has caused will wrest away your political power and they will indeed take away your guns. And it will be your own fault. Your own fault for refusing to face reality and follow common sense. Read More

Trump’s EPA hides toxic water crisis report

A federal report on a growing crisis of toxins in the nation’s water remains hidden after the White House and the EPA intervened to prevent its release to the public, Politico reported Monday.

One Trump official said the report would cause a “public relations nightmare.”

Evidently Trump and the Republican Party worry more about politically toxic facts than they do about life-threatening toxins in our water. That’s the anti-life party at work. Read More

Trump ends vital climate monitoring program

The Trump Administration has killed a NASA program that is vital to monitoring the world’s progress in avoiding climate catastrophe.

This is not at all surprising for an administration that has told federal employees to lie to you about climate science, has stripped most mentions of climate change from government websites, and is battling California for having the states-rights audacity to set stricter air pollution standards than the federal government.

See no evil, hear no evil, but speak evil of anyone who does. That’s Trump and his anti-life Republican Party, which roundly supports every one of the administration’s attacks on environmental protections. Read More

Florida faces devastation. Denial will make it worse.

No graver threat faces the future of South Florida than the accelerating pace of sea-level rise. In the past century, the sea has risen 9 inches in Key West. In the past 23 years, it’s risen 3 inches. By 2060, it’s predicted to rise another 2 feet, with no sign of slowing down.

So begins the first article in a major effort by South Florida’s major newspapers, along with PBS and NPR, implicitly reading the riot act to a state whose Republican governor, Rick Scott, has not only ignored climate science but has placed gag orders on public discussion of it by state employees. Cavuto newest victim in mad truth disease epidemic

Fox News host Neil Cavuto became the third prominent Republican in a week to succumb to “mad truth disease,” saying, “Let me be real clear, Mr. President. How can you drain the swamp if you’re the one who keeps muddying the waters?” Read More

Save your phony Earth Day tweets, leaders

At the time of the first Earth Day in 1970, shortly before my 13th birthday, there was a widespread sense that Americans finally were beginning to value the earth, to understand its essential role in sustaining life, and to demand actions to keep those support systems healthy. It was an era when there was enough bipartisan agreement to pass major, much-needed legislation to clean our air and water, to clean up toxic waste, to protect endangered species and preserve large wild areas that are important both for their beauty and their biodiversity.

China meets 2020 carbon target ahead of schedule

China met its 2020 carbon intensity target three years early, its Xinhua news agency has reported. By the end of 2017, the nation had cut its carbon intensity 46 percent below its 2005 level. This drop came during a period when its economy more than doubled in size. Read More

Millennials show rising power of progressives

There is a wide and growing generational gap in political views among Americans, according to recent reports by the Pew Research Center. Millennials in particular have adopted perspectives far to the left of older Americans. Gen Xers, also, to a lesser extent, indicate a long period ahead of rising power for progressive politics, as the stalwart generations of conservatives die out. Read More

Mob Don Trump goes bananas over FBI raid

President Trump went bananas after the FBI’s sudden raid of his attorney’s office, home and hotel. “I have this witch hunt constantly going on for over 12 months now,” Trump said, adding: “It’s an attack on our country, in a true sense. It’s an attack on what we all stand for.”

There you have it. Trump now equates the nation with himself. “The president’s words were more befitting a mob don when the feds are closing in,” said former White House ethics counsel Norman Eisen. Read More
